David Gillieson is a geographer and geomorphologist with research interests in cave and karst geomorphology. He also has research interests in satellite and aerial image analysis for environmental management. He is a licensed drone operator and has carried out projects and consultancies using colour, infra-red and LIDAR imagery in northern Australia, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Kangaroo Island in South Australia. He is an Honorary Life Member and past Australian Vice-President of the Australasian Cave and Karst Management Association.

His research activity is indexed by 180 peer-reviewed publications and consultancy reports with 8 books or monographs. These reflect a strong interest in resource management and development issues in limestone terrains, as well as in cave and karst geomorphology. His textbook Caves: Processes, Development & Management (Blackwells, 1996) has been used as the standard for university courses, cave guide and ranger training in several countries; a greatly expanded second edition of this text for Wiley was published in June 2021. He was also co-author of the IUCN Guidelines for Cave and Karst Protection (1997), which has been translated into twelve languages and has been the international standard for cave and karst management planning. Over the last two years an international team led by David has written a new edition of the Guidelines for Cave and Karst Protection. It is jointly published by the International Union of Speleology (UIS) with support from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and with significant input from the International Show Cave Association (ISCA).
